John Keyse SHERWIN (Sussex 1751 - London 1790) "Madonna and Child by Donatello" Original etching with burin retouches and punctuated manner by a drawing by Edward Rumsey from a bronze relief by Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi called Donatello ( 1386 - 1466) known as the "Madonna Chellini", printed and published in London by Robert Pollard in 1790. Beautiful copy printed on a portion of eighteenth-century laid paper bearing an undecoded watermark, complete with the imprint of the plate and with small margins , in a generally perfect state of conservation. The bronze, made by Donatello around 1456, was used by the sculptor as a gift to his personal doctor Giovanni Chellini from San Miniato who remembers it in some of his documents, hence the name of the work that is now part of the Victoria & Albert collections Museum of London. Bibliography: LeBlanc "Manuel de l'Amateur d'Estampes" Paris 1889 vol.3 pag. 499 n ° 14. Slater "Engravings and their value" London 1912 p. 599. http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O70184/the-virgin-and-child-with-roundel-donatello/ Measures in mm: 330 x 303
